The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) had planned the Rising against British rule to break out on 23 April 1916. Weapons for the IRB were supplied by Germany, which the shipment included over 20,000 rifles, as well as 10 machine guns. However, the plot was discovered on 21 April 1916 and the weapons were lost when the ship carrying them was scuttled to prevent the arms from falling into the hands of the British.
The IRB plan was to seize a compact area of central Dublin and launch simultaneous risings around the country. In the event, the rising consisted of a week’s street fighting in the Irish capital after which the rebels surrendered. The British used overwhelming force, including over 16,000 troops, artillery, and a naval gunboat, to put down the rebellion. Over half the 500 or so killed were civilians caught in the crossfire. It was during the Rising that the Volunteers began to refer to themselves as the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
The leaders seized the General Post Office (GPO), raising two flags: a green flag bearing the legend "Irish Republic" and the Tricolour, and proclaiming independence for Ireland. The Rising later became a celebrated episode for Irish nationalists. The rebel Volunteers were a minority faction among Irish nationalists and up to 200,000 Irishmen were serving on the British side in the First World War. There were calls for the execution of the "ringleaders" in the major Irish nationalist daily newspaper, the Irish Independent, and local authorities also sought the ringleaders.
However, opinion dramatically shifted to the rebels’ side in the next two years. Opinion shifted even more in favour of the Republicans in 1917–18 with the Conscription Crisis, an attempt by Britain to impose conscription on Ireland to bolster its flagging war effort. By 1917, this was extremely unpopular in Ireland due to heavy casualties on the Western Front.
From 1916 to 1918, the two dominant nationalist movements, Sinn Féin and the Irish Parliamentary Party, fought a tough series of battles in by-elections. Neither won a decisive victory; however, the Conscription Crisis tipped the balance in favour of Sinn Féin.
In this new position of strength, the Irish Volunteers, who had been swollen to over 100,000 men in the conscription crisis, were re-organised as the army of this Republic. Hence they began to refer to themselves as the Irish Republican Army.

The Mérida Initiative is a security cooperation agreement between the United States and the government of Mexico and the countries of Central America, with the declared aim of combating the threats of drug & weapons trafficking, transnational organized crime and money laundering. The assistance includes training, equipment and intelligence. In seeking partnership with the United States, Mexican officials point out that the illicit drug trade is a shared problem in need of a shared solution.
The Mérida Initiative includes $74 million to be assigned for efforts by the U.S. government to stop the flow of illegal weapons from the U.S. to Mexico, but important concerns remain regarding how this will be achieved. According to a Mexican government official, as many as 2,000 weapons enter Mexico each year and fuel an arms race between competing drug cartels. Since 1996, the ATF has traced more than 62,000 firearms smuggled into Mexico from the United States. Mexican government officials suspect that corrupt customs officials, on both sides of the border, help smuggle weapons into Mexico; as reported by ATF, the most common "traced" firearms now include the Colt AR-15 .223 caliber rifle, the AK-47 assault rifle, FN 5.7 caliber semi-automatic pistol and a variety of armor piercing .50 caliber long range sniper rifles and machine guns. Also, there have been occasions where grenade launchers were used against security forces.
U.S. law enforcement officials estimate that US $12 to 15 billion per year flows from the United States to the Mexican traffickers, and that is just in cash, not including the money sent by wire transfers. Other government agencies, including the Government Accountability Office and the National Drug Intelligence Center, have estimated that Mexico’s cartels earn upwards of $23 billion per year in illicit drug revenue from the United States.

During World War II, Operation Gauntlet was a Combined Operations raid by Canadian troops, with British Army logistics support and Free Norwegian Forces servicemen on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, 600 miles south of the North Pole, from 18 August 1941.
The objective was to destroy the rich coal mines there together with associated equipment and stores, which it was correctly assumed the Germans intended to make use of. These mines on Norwegian territory were owned and operated by Norway and by the Soviet Union and both governments agreed to their destruction and the evacuation of their nationals.

Christopher Columbus is often portrayed as the first European to sail to the Americas. He is sometimes portrayed as the discoverer of the New World. However, this is controversial on many counts. There is evidence that the first Europeans to sail across the Atlantic were Viking explorers from Scandinavia. In addition, the land was already populated by indigenous peoples, who had ‘discovered’ the Americas thousands of years before.
Columbus Day celebrations are controversial because the settlement of Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a very large proportion of the native people. It has been argued that this was a direct result of Columbus’ actions. It is clear that the arrival of the European settlers led to the demise of a large proportion of the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It has also been argued that Columbus should not be honored for discovering the United States, as he only went as far as some islands in the Caribbean and never got as far as mainland America. The controvery is vast and very dark, but Christopher Columbus’ "exploration" is still a vital part of our American history.
This Operation will be a modern day version of the Christopher Columbus story. Old world exploration and acquisitions with new world weapons and tactics. How would the indigenous people of America defend against an armada fighting with automatic weapons? Would Columbus’ conquest of America been possible if the natives were armed with sniper rifles and grenades? There’s only one way to find out…Operation Columbus!
